Java - URLConnection getContent() Method with Examples

Description

The Java URLConnection getContent() method retrieves the contents of this URL connection. This method first determines the content type of the object by calling the getContentType method. If this is the first time that the application has seen that specific content type, a content handler for that content type is created.

Return Value

the object fetched. The instanceof operator should be used to determine the specific kind of object returned.

Exception

IOException − if an I/O error occurs while getting the content.

UnknownServiceException − if the protocol does not support the content type.

Example 1

The following example shows the usage of Java URLConnection getContent() method for a valid url with https protocol. In this example, we're creating an instance of URL class. Using url.openConnection() method, we're getting the URLConnection instance. Using getContent(), we're getting the content of the home page of the website and printing the same −
