\mathop command is used to force the argument to be treated in the 'large operator' class.

EXAMPLE

1. atbtc

   $ atbtc $

2. a\mathop{t}b\mathop{t}c

   $ a\mathop{t}b\mathop{t}c $

3. \star_a^b

   $ \star_a^b $
