Intelligence Bureau (IB) was founded for dealing with the International and national security threats to India. It is the earliest security agency in India and the world of its type.

Agency Background

Intelligence Bureau (IB) was founded in 1887 as a Centers Special Cell by the British Government to keep an eye on Russian Troops.

  • In 1909 it was working as the “Indian Political Intelligence Office” in England by the British government to keep a check on “Indian Revolutionary Activities”.

  • In 1921, it was working jointly with the “Surveillance and Monitoring Agency”.

  • Later, in 1947 after independence it was reorganised as the “Intelligence Bureau under the Ministry of Home Affairs” with the motto “always alert”.

  • In 1962 and 1965 during Indo-Sino and Indo-Pak War respectively its one wing was transferred to RAW for domestic and internal affairs security.

The role of the Intelligence Bureau is to maintain the internal and external security of the nation. Apart from this, it has various roles and responsibilities.

  • It works as a security advisor to both state and central governments.

  • It works 24/7 to keep the nation safe and secure from internal and external threats.

  • It also provides secret information to borders for being alert and safe.

  • It provides essential information to security agencies and police forces for better working.

  • Work as an antiterrorist cell and neutralise threats for the security of the nation.

Organisational Structure

The Intelligence Bureau also works at multiple levels. It has an organised wing that works at different levels to give its best. In IB the highest post is of director currently owned by IPS officer “Tapan Deka”.

  • Below the director, there is a secretary director, additional director, joint director and deputy director in decreasing order respectively.

  • At one rank below the deputy director, there is Deputy Central Intelligence Officer.

  • The Deputy Central intelligence officer is assisted by the Junior Intelligence Officer.

  • The lowest rank in the intelligence bureau is security Assistant.

Recruitment and Selection Process

You can join the Intelligence Bureau after graduation at various posts offered by them. For this, you have to appear for an entrance exam conducted by the ministry of Home Affairs.

  • The minimum age for joining IB is 18 years for the ACIO post and the maximum age is 27 years for the general category. There is age relaxation for different categories.

  • You can earn a basic pay of 13500 for ACIO posts and a grade pay of 4600. Apart from this, you will get HRA, TA, CPC fitment factor etc.

After qualifying for the entrance test you have to appear for the written exam and then interview. Here are a few posts at which you can join IB after graduation;

  • IB ACIO (Assistant Central Intelligence Officer) Grade II

  • Intelligence Officer

  • Inspector (SI)

  • Security Officer

For all these posts you have to be a graduate of different disciplines for different positions.

Q1. What is the exam pattern of the IB ACIO exam?

Ans: The IB tier-I exam is conducted in three tiers, Tier I is an objective test of Quantitative, Logical/Numerical/ Analytical ability, English Language and General Awareness. It consists of 100 questions for 100 marks.

  • Tier-II exam is a written test. In this exam, you are tested for easy writing and comprehension of 50 marks.

  • Tier-III level is an interview of 100 marks.

For joining these posts you have to appear for the entrance exam, which is conducted in two tiers; Tier-I objective test, and Tier-II- descriptive paper.
