What happens when- (give reasons)
(a) Rhoeo leaves are put in sugar solution.
(b) Boiled Rhoeo leaves are put in sugar solution.
Leaves are made up of living cells that die upon boiling.
Usually, when leaves are placed into the sugar solution, the movement of water occurs from inside the cell of the leaf to the outside of the solution to maintain the concentration gradient. This is known as osmosis.
During boiling, the cells of Rhoeo leaves will shrink at high temperatures and die. In such a case, if the leaves are placed into the sugar solution, dead cells do not intake water through osmosis.
However, if the Rhoeo leaves are placed in sugar solution without boiling, then cells will undergo exosmosis.
