What are the tools of dimensional modelling project?
There are various tools to facilitate the project are as follows −
Data Warehouse Bus Architecture Matrix − The matrix produced by the design team in their internal meetings can be cleaned up and used as a presentation support for meetings with several designers, authority, and end-users. The matrix is very useful as a high-level introduction to the design. It provides each audience a look of what the eventual function of the data warehouse will develop into.
Fact Table Diagram − After preparing Bus Architecture the matrix, it can prepare a logical diagram of each completed fact table. The fact table not only shows the specifics of a given fact table but the context of the fact table in the overall data mart.
The fact table includes an overview of all of the dimensions that have been identified for the business. This serves as an introduction to the overall model. The supporting information for the diagram includes the name of each dimension and a description of that dimension.
For each of the dimensions, a brief description should also be provided. If possible, the descriptions should appear directly with the diagram to enhance the usefulness of the model. The fact table diagram also shows all the other dimensions proposed for the data mart without connections.
These disconnected dimensions can provide as creative more dimensions that can be goals for connecting to the definite fact table or as warnings of dimensions that cannot be provided for the definite fact table.
The fact table diagram also serves multiple communications purposes including −
Link between IS and users − The development of the fact table diagram allows close partnering between IS and the users. The fact table diagram builds ownership of the business users in the project. The document can also be used for formal acceptance of the design by the business.
Support with data access tool selection − A scaled-back adaptation of the fact table diagram can be submitted to data access tool vendors with several key business questions. The vendors are said to compute if and how they can address the business questions. If you have narrowed down the list of possible vendors, you could provide sample data and have the vendors develop their solutions for your evaluation.
End-user training − The fact table diagram has been proven to be a successful training tool because it provides an introduction to the data that is understandable by the users.
Dimension Table − This shows the individual attributes within a single dimension. Each dimension will have a separate diagram. The diagram displays the specific grain of each dimension. The dimension table detail shows the approximate cardinality of each dimension attribute and allows the users to quickly see the multiple hierarchies and relationships between the attributes.
