What are Google Trends?

Businesses today have claimed that around 40% of their website traffic has been generated through search engine optimization (SEO). SEO seems like the new buzzword when it comes to digital marketing. We know how to create SEO-rich content in order to get organic traffic on the website and build up a robust image in front of the browsing websites like Google, Safari, and Firefox and their algorithms or updates, but what about monitoring them and their performance to ensure improvisation? Google Trends assists us with the digital marketing aspect.

In this article, we will understand the concept of Google Trends, how it works, and what different types of data we can fetch through it that can help us improve our website and its content.

The Concept of Google Trends

Google Trends helps users by providing them with keyword-related content. It helps the user understand the search volume index and the geographical information about the search engine users. It helps the users understand how many times a keyword has been entered in relation to the total search volume index of the website, and then compares that data to check the performance of each and every keyword. Decide which ones are working for the company, and they should plan on adding more to their content. Different filters can be applied to this search to get a better understanding and discover the events that triggered a spike in the keyword search volume.

What is the Functionality of Google Trends, and What Kinds of Useful Information Can a User Obtain from It?

  • Read about the most searched topic: When you open the app and scroll down, you will see a section where you can see what the most popular search in that geographical location is right now. You can dig up more information on that content and maybe relate it to your product or service. For example, in the US, "Hurricane Irma" has been the most searched topic, and when it comes to Florida, the "how to" keyword has been added to "hurricane Irma."

  • What has been trending in the past? When you scroll down more, you will see that part where you can see what the most trending keywords in the past years are and what geographical locations they have been in. For example, in the year 2022, in India, the most trending keywords were "Indian Premier League," "CoWin," "FIFA World Cup," and "What is the Agneepath scheme?" What is NATO? How to Get PTCR Challans and others.

  • You can add any search term that you want on the search key bar on the topmost page to understand how the particular keywords have performed. In those search results, you can add filters as per the geographical location, time frame, and all categories (where you can understand how the terms have performed in various industries, for example, arts and entertainment, autos and vehicles, beauty and fitness, books and literature, finance, computers, and electronics, and others), and on the basis of the category of web search (image search, news search, YouTube search, and others). These filtrations of data will help you better understand how the keywords have been performing in your industry, location, and time frame.

  • You can also use the compare function at the top of the search to see how two words compare against each other. All the filters mentioned above (Time, Categories, Web Search, and Location) are still applicable for this comparison. This will help you understand which keyword to go for.

  • A tip would be to not invest your money in Google search ads for these generalized keywords because this will ensure website traffic, but sales or conversion are not guaranteed. If you are planning for Google paid ads, it is better to use long-tail keywords, for example, "best cake shops in Howrah," or you can use irrelevant search terms using Google Trends to find keywords that will not affect your Google ad cost.

  • To conduct a more in-depth analysis, add more keywords to the comparison tab.

  • When you scroll down, if you will, to the related queries table, These are basically telling you what other related keywords have been used and their performance. For example, for convenience, I have used the keywords "cake," and now I am getting suggestions like "coco melon theme cake," "IGP cake," "coco melon cake," "cheesecake near me," "teachers' day cake," and others and their performances.

  • You can even divide it on the basis of states in India and download it in the form of a CSV file. This CSV file can be imported into Excel, where you can see tables and create charts for better understanding.

  • At the very bottom, Google will provide you with lessons on how to use the 40 different Google products, including Google Trends.

This is how Google Trends works in its free version. You can get a paid subscription to the same to get more information regarding Google Trends related to keywords.
