Why the souring of milk is a chemical change?
The souring of milk is a chemical change. Milk that is spoiled is sour, with a foul taste and odour. It can also become lumpy and curdled. This is a change on a molecular level that cannot be reversed because they form some new substance. So it is an Irreversible and Permanent Change as souring produces new molecules.
[Recapitulation:
Chemical change: The change in which chemical properties of the matter change is known as chemical change.
During a chemical reaction, the chemical bonds between the molecules are broken and rearranged, and new bonds are formed resulting in the formation of new compounds.
For example, a photosynthesis reaction is a chemical change as carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll to give sugar molecules and oxygen as a product. Here, sugar once formed cannot be converted back to carbon dioxide and water easily. As a new compound is formed from the reaction between water and carbon dioxide, it is a chemical change.
Properties of chemical change are as follows:
1. Chemical changes are irreversible. The original form of the matter cannot be attained.
2. It is a permanent change and one or more new substance is formed.
3. During a chemical change, energy is produced in the form of heat, light or sound, while during a chemical reaction, energy is either absorbed or released.
4. Chemical change causes changes in the physical and chemical properties of the substance.]
