Why do we consider that 1 is neither a composite nor a prime number?
1 is a unique number when compared to other numbers
A prime number is a number that has 1 and itself as its factors. Prime numbers have only two factors.
Example: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11....These are prime numbers and they have only two factors.
Factors of 2: 1, 2;
Factors of 7: 1, 7 and so on
1 is NOT a prime number because it has only ONE factor, that is 1 itself.
1 is a factor of every other number OR 1 is a factor of all numbers.
A composite number is a number that is NOT a prime number. Composite numbers have three or more factors.
Eg: Factors of 4 = 1, 2, 2; Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Since 1 DOES NOT have three or more factors it is NOT a composite number.
So, 1 is NEITHER PRIME NOR COMPOSITE
