Why Carbon is tetravalent?
Carbon has four electrons in its valence (outermost) shell orbital. So the valency of carbon is four. Thus, it is tetravalent.
It is difficult to hold four extra electrons and would require a large amount of heat to remove four electrons from its outer shell. So, it can neither accept nor gain four electrons, therefore it forms bonds by sharing electrons.
