Which of the following statements is true about the product of two proper fractions?

(a) It is always greater than both the fractions.

(b) It is always less than both the fractions.

(c) It always lies between the two fractions.

(d) It is always an improper fraction.

Solution :

A proper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator.

Let $x = \frac{2}{3}, y = \frac{1}{4}$

$x \times y = \frac{2}{3} \times \frac{1}{4} $

               $ = \frac{2}{12} = \frac{1}{6}$

$\frac{2}{3} >  \frac{1}{6},  \frac{1}{4}> \frac{1}{6}$.

Therefore,  the product of two proper fractions is always less than both the fractions.

Option (b) is true.
