Where does the absorption of food and water occur?

Almost all ingested food, 80 percent of electrolytes, and 90 percent of water are absorbed in the small intestine. Although the entire small intestine is involved in the absorption of water and lipids, most absorption of carbohydrates and proteins occurs in the jejunum, a portion of the small intestine.

The walls of the small intestine absorb water and the digested nutrients and inject them into your bloodstream. Most of the absorption of nutrients occurs in the small intestine. Water and minerals are reabsorbed back into the blood in the colon (large intestine) where the pH is slightly acidic.
