What would you observe if you place a magnet on a cork and float the cork in a trough filled with water?
If you place a magnet (magnetized iron needle) on a cork and float the cork in a trough filled with water, you will observe that the needle always points towards the north when the cork stops rotating. This is because our earth itself behaves like a magnet, due to which freely suspended magnetic needle aligned itself always in a particular direction: north-south.
This activity represents a simple magnetic compass because a magnetic compass is an instrument that always points to the North direction. It is used to find the direction.
