What is the method for separating a mixture of common salt, sand and iron filing?
We can separate a mixture of Common salt, sand and iron filling by the following steps:
Step 1- By the use of magnets/ Magnetic Separation - iron filings will be attracted to magnets and will stick to it and hence can be separated in this way.
Step 2- Mixing of sand and salt with water. The salt will dissolve in water. Undissolved sand will sit at the bottom of the flask by sedimentation.
Step 3- Decantation- the salty water is removed from sand by decantation and sieving if required.
Step 4- Boiling- the salty water is boiled due to which water will evaporate leaving behind the only salt.
