What is the meaning of saprophyte?

Saprophytes are the organisms that feed on dead or decaying organic material by secreting enzymes on it and absorbing nutrients.

Most common saprophytes are fungi and bacteria.

Saprophyte is an important part of the food chain as they decompose decay organisms and release nutrients into the soil, required for plant growth.
