What is the meaning of filament?

A filament is a thin wire with two bigger wires holding it up. Whenever electricity flows through the filament, it glows. Generally, filaments have high resistance, therefore, when electricity passes through them, they heat up and start glowing, converting electrical energy to heat energy.
