What is Pitch?
Changing the frequency can change the nature of sound. The nature of 100Hz sound is different from that of a 1000Hz sound. When a 100Hz sound is played, the source and finally the air particles vibrate at 100Hz frequency. Similarly, when a 1000Hz frequency is played, the sound source and finally the air particles vibrate at 1000Hz. When the two sound sources played back to back, even though both have same loudness, it can be observed that the shrillness or the pitch of the 1000Hz source is higher than that of 100Hz.
Similarly, if a 1000Hz sound and 5000Hz sounds are played back to back, it can be observed that the pitch or shrillness of the 5000Hz is more than that of the 1000Hz sound. Hence from this we can conclude that the higher the frequency the higher the pitch.
