What is meant by potential difference between two points?

Potential difference between two points in a circuit is defined as work done in moving one unit of charge from one point to the other.

In a circuit, battery does the work of maintaining potential difference. When charge is flowing in the circuit, battery does work on the charge in moving it from low potential to high potential.

The amount of work done by battery in moving a unit charge is known as potential difference.
