What is matrix?

Matrix is the material or tissue in between a eukaryotic organism's cells (in animal or plant cells) in which specialized structures are fixed to a surrounding mass. It is found in various connective tissues. Fingernails and toenails grow from matrices.

For example, there are matrices such as the Golgi apparatus matrix, and the mitochondrial matrix.
