What is inner bark?

The inner soft bark, or bast, is found below the outer bark and is produced by the vascular cambium which is consists of secondary phloem tissue that transport sugar from the leaves to the rest of the tree.

It lives for only a short time then the cells begin to die off and the layers begin to compress and turns to cork to become part of the protective outer bark.
