What is evolution?
Species keep on evolving because the requirements of an organism changes with the changing environment. This change over a period of time is adaptation which takes place as per the natural requirements.
As per Darwin’s theory only higher changes are selected naturally and the lower ones get eliminated. For example, the residents of tropical countries have more melanin which protects them from the sunlight. According to Darwin all organisms had one common ancestor at some point of time and it kept on diverging.
According to Charles Darwin evolution is a gradual process. Evolution took place over billions of years because the changes and adaptation take a long time to stabilize and give rise to a new species.
