What is average?
Average: An average is a single number that represents the “middle” value of all the numbers in a list or set. There are three different types of average.
(i) Mean
(ii) Median
(iii) Mode
Mean:
Mean is often called average.
$\displaystyle Mean\ =\ \frac{Sum\ of\ observations}{Number\ of\ observations}$
Example: 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10
$\displaystyle \begin{array}{{>{\displaystyle}l}} Mean\ =\ \frac{2\ +\ 4\ +\ 6\ +\ 8\ +\ 10}{5} \ =\ \frac{30}{5}\ \ Mean\ =\ 6 \end{array}$
Median:
Median is the middle number in the ordered set of data.
Example: 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10
Median of the above is 6
Mode:
Most common number of the data.
Example: 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 , 10 , 2 , 12 , 2 , 6
Mode of the above data is 2.
