What is an oxidation reaction? Identify in the following reaction (i) the substance oxidised, (ii) the substance reduced:
ZnO + C ----> Zn + CO
Oxidation Reaction is the reaction in which oxygen is added to a substance or hydrogen is removed from a substance.
$ \begin{array}{l}
ZnO\ +\ C\ \rightarrow \ Zn\ +\ CO
\end{array}$
(i) C is oxidised as it has gained oxygen to form CO.
(ii) ZnO is reduced as it has lost oxygen to form Zn.
