What is a reference point?

Reference point, or frame of reference, is a point or object in relation to which measurements of size, position, or motion can be made.

An object is said to be in motion if it changes its position relative to a reference point. Objects that are fixed relative to Earth are: buildings, trees, towers, etc.

For example:
While travelling in a car, when we look out the window and notice that our car is moving faster than the car next to us. The car next to us is moving, but it is just moving slower than our car. Therefore, we use that other car as a reference point to determine that our car is moving.
