What happens when vinegar is added to baking soda ? How do you test the gas produced?
Vinegar contains acetic acid (CH_{3} COOH). Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO_{3}). So, when the two are mixed, bubbles of carbon dioxide will instantly evolve from the mixture.
The following reaction occurs.
$CH_{3} COOH\ +\ NaHCO_{3} \ =\ CH_{3} COONa\ +CO_{2} \ +\ H_{2} O\ $
To test for CO2, bubble the gas through "lime water". When you bubble carbon dioxide through the solution, it forms a solid precipitate of calcium carbonate – chalk or limestone.
