What happens to (a) the H+ ions, and (b) temperature of the solution, when an acid is neutralized?
(a)During neutralization of acid, H+ ions combine with OH– ions to form water. The reaction can be represented as:
Acid + Base → Salt + Water
Example: $NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H_2O$
(b) As neutralization of acid is an exothermic reaction, therefore, the temperature of the solution increases.
