When sound is produced at the source, a disturbance is created. This disturbance travels as compressions and rarefactions in the air medium. Even though the sound is traveling the medium from source to other places, the particles of the medium are not carried along with the sound. The particles in the medium stay where they are and vibrate. Only the disturbance in the particles is carried forward.
