What depth is required for crops?

The depth of sowing crops varies from shallow (2-3 cm) to deep (10-12 cm) depending on the soil type and moisture condition. Usually, the most favourable depth of sowing crops is 3-5 cm.

Deeper sowing is advantageous in sandy soils while shallow sowing is beneficial in heavy soils.

Generally, seeds should be planted at a depth of two times the width, or diameter, of the seed.

For example, if you have a seed that's about 1/14 inch thick, then it should be planted about 1/7 inch deep. Large bean seeds, which can be up to 1/2 inch wide, may need to be planted an inch deep.
