1. When heat is added to a substance, the molecules and atoms vibrate faster. 

2. As atoms vibrate faster, the space between atoms increases. The motion and spacing of the particles determine the state of matter of the substance.

3. Change of state of matter may occur as solid may change to liquid and liquid into gases.
