What are the indicators? Name some commonly known indicators.


Indicators are substances whose solutions change colour due to changes in pH. These are called acid-base indicators. They are usually weak acids or bases, but their conjugate base or acid forms have different colours due to differences in their absorption spectra.


There are many types of Indicators, but some commonly known of them are:-

Natural Indicators- Litmus, Red cabbage, Rosewater, Turmeric.

Synthetic indicators- Methyl orange, Phenolphthalein, Methyl red, Congo red etc. Olfactory Indicators- Garlic, Onion etc. Universal Indicator - Litmus etc.
