Various chromosomal rearrangements comprise different classes of events like deletions, duplications, inversions and translocations.
- Deletion: Deletion occurs when part of the chromosome, small or large, is deleted along a chromosome.
- Duplication: Duplications occur when part of the chromosome is abnormally copied or duplicated.
- Inversion: Inversion is the breakdown and rejoining of a part of a chromosome or chromosomal segment between nonhomologous chromosomes.
- Translocation: Translocation occurs when a small or large piece of chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome. It is an exchange of chromosome segments between nonhomologous chromosomes.
