The weight (in kg) of 15 students of a class is as under 48,38,45,42,41,39,38,43,49,37,42,41,35,40,38. Find the mean, median and mode of the above data. Are they same?

Sum of all observations = 48 + 38 + 45 + 42 + 41 + 39 + 38 + 43 + 49 + 37 + 42 + 41 + 35 + 40 + 38 = 616

Mean:

$ \begin{array}{l}
Arithmetic\ Mean\ =\frac{Summation\ of\ all\ observations}{Number\ of\ observations}\\
\\
\\
Arithmetic\ Mean\ =\frac{616}{15}\\
\\
\\
Arithmetic\ Mean\ =41.07
\end{array}$

Median:

Arranging the data in ascending order

35, 37, 38, 38, 38, 39, 40, 41, 41, 42, 42, 43, 45, 48, 49.

If the number of observations is odd, the observation right in the middle of the data set acts as the median.

Here number of observations are 15 which is an odd number. So,

Median = 41

Mode:

The Mode is the value that occurs the most in a data set.

Here 38 occurs most number of times i.e three times.

So, mode of this data set is 38.

We can see that mean, Median and mode are not same in this data set.
