The sum of two rational numbers is $\frac{-5}{8}$. If one of them is $\frac{7}{16}$find the other.
Given:
Sum of two rational numbers = $\frac{-5 }{8}$
One of the number = $\frac{7}{16}$
To do: Find the other rational number
Solution:
Another number = $x$
$x+\frac{7}{16} = \frac-{5}{8}$
$x= -\frac{7}{16} \frac-{5}{8}$
Here denominators are different,
so find LCM of 8 and 16
LCM of 8 and 16 is 16
$x$ = $\frac{-5 \times 2}{8 \times 2} - \frac{7}{16}$
$x = \frac{-10}{16} - \frac{7}{16}$
$x = \frac{-10-7}{16}$
$x = \frac{-17}{16}$
So, another number is $\frac{-17}{16}$
