The mean of five numbers is 27. If one number is excluded, their mean is 25. Find the excluded number.
Given:
The mean of five numbers is 27.
When one number is excluded, their mean is 25.
To do:
We have to find the excluded number.
Solution:
We know that,
Mean $\overline{X}=\frac{Sum\ of\ the\ observations}{Number\ of\ observations}$
Mean of 5 numbers $= 27$
This implies,
Total $= 27 \times 5$
$= 135$
When one number is excluded, their mean is 25.
This implies,
Total of 4 numbers $= 4 \times 25$
$= 100$
Therefore,
Excluded number $= 135 - 100$
$= 35$
