The distance between two bus stops is 5 km, a bus travels the distance in 20 min. What is the speed of the bus? Also, convert it in meters per second. Can it also be called as the average speed of the bus?
Given :
Distance between the two bus stops $= 5 km$
Time taken by the bus $= 20$ minutes.
To Find :
Speed in km/hr
Speed in m/s
Solution :
Formula to find speed,
$speed =\frac{Distance}{time}$
Distance = 5 km
Time = 20 minutes
Convert minutes to hours
60 minutes = 1 hour
20 minutes = $\frac{20}{60} hr = \frac{1}{3} hr$
$speed =\frac{5}{\frac{1}{3}}$
$speed = 5\times 3$
$speed =15 km/hr$
Convert the speed into m/s
15 km/hr
1 km = 1000 m ; 1 hr = 3600 seconds
$speed =\frac{15\times 1000}{3600}$ m/s
$speed =\frac{15\times 5}{18}$ m/s
$speed =\frac{25}{6}$ m/s
It can also be called as the average speed of the bus.
Speed in km/hr = 15 km/hr
Speed in m/s = $\frac{25}{6} \ m/s$
