The difference between two numbers is 26 and one number is three times the other. Find them.
Given:
The difference between two numbers is 26 and one number is three times the other.
To do:
We have to find the number.
Solution:
Let the numbers be $x$ and $y$.
According to the question,
$x-y=26$
$x=y+26$....(i)
One number is three times the other.
This implies,
$x=3y$ ($x$ is the larger number as $x-y=26$)
Substituting $x=3y$ in equation (i), we get,
$3y=y+26$
$3y-y=26$
$2y=26$
$y=13$
Therefore,
$x=3y=3(13)=39$
The required numbers are 13 and 39.
