Given :

Smita's mother is 34 years old. Two years from now mother's age will be 4 times Smita's present age.

To do :

We have to find the present age of Smita.

Solution :

Let the present age of Smita be $x$.

Age of Smita after 2 years $= x+2$

Age of Smita's mother after 2 years $= 34+2$

$=36$

Therefore,

$36 = 4(x+2)$

$36 = 4x+8$

$4x = 36-8$

$4x = 28$

$x = \frac{28}{4}$

$x = 7$

The present age of Smita is 7 years.
