Sketch the cross section of soil and label the various layers.
Soil is nothing but the skin of the earth. It is a mixture of minerals, water, air, organic materials, etc. It forms the surface of the land and helps in supporting plant and animal life on earth. A soil profile is a vertical cross-section of the soil. It is made of layers, known as soil horizons, running parallel to the surface. These layers of soil can easily be identified by the soil colour and size of soil particles. Each of these layers has distinct characteristics. The different layers of soil are given below:
- Topsoil
- Subsoil
- Parent rock
Soil profile helps in determining the type and role of the soil. It helps to differentiate the given sample of soil from others based on factors like its colour, texture, structure, and thickness, as well as its chemical composition.
