Show by means of calculations that 5 moles of CO2 and 5 moles of H2O do not have the same mass. How much is the difference in their masses?


To prove: The mass of 5 moles of carbon dioxide and 5 moles of water is not the same. 
Mass of 5 moles of carbon dioxide:
Molar mass of carbon dioxide = (1 × 12) + (2 × 16) = 44g
We know that 44g of carbon dioxide represent 1 mole.
Therefore, 5 moles of carbon dioxide weigh = 5 × 44 = 220g

Mass of 5 moles of water:
Molar mass of water = (2 × 1) + (1 × 16) = 18g
We know that 18g of water represents 1 mole.
Therefore, 5 moles of water weigh = 5 × 18 = 90g
Hence, it is proved that the mass of 5 moles of carbon dioxide and water is not the same. 5 moles of carbon dioxide weigh 130g more than 5 moles of water.
