Name the ore of mercury. With the help of balanced chemical equations, explain the process of extraction of mercury from its ore.
Ore of mercury is Cinnabar. Its formula is HgS and is called mercury (II) sulphide.
The extraction of mercury from Cinnabar involves two steps
(I) Concentrated mercury (II)sulphide ore is roasted in air to form mercuric oxide (HgO)
$ 2HgS(S) +3O_{2}(g)\rightarrow \underset{(S) }{2HgO}+\underset{(g)}{2SO_{2}}$
(II) This HgO formed on further heating to about 300oC, changes to pure mercury metal.
$2HgO(S)\overset{\Delta }{\rightarrow}2Hg(l)+O_{2}(g)$
