Name any three methods for separating from solid mixtures.

When two or more substances are mixed together they form a mixture. Components of a mixture should be separated because some components may not be useful or may spoil the useful component of the mixture.

Sedimentation is the process in which heavier particles of an insoluble solid settle down in a liquid.

Decantation is the process of pouring out the liquid without disturbing the sediment.

Eg: sand and water.

Sieving is a method in which fine particles are sieved through holes of the sieve while the bigger impurities remain on the sieve.

Eg: Sieving is used in a flour mill to separate impurities like husk and stones from wheat before grinding it.

Winnowing is a farming method developed by ancient people for separating grain from the chaff.

It involves throwing the mixture into the air so that the wind blows away the lighter chaff. The heavier grains fall back down for recovery.
