Given: Michael finished coloring a picture in  $\frac{7}{12}$ hour

To do:  Who worked longer and by what fraction was it longer

Solution:

Michael finished colouring a picture in $\frac{7}{12}$  hours. Vaid finished colouring a picture in 3/4 hour. Who worked longer? By what fraction was it longer?

Answer:

Comparing fractions $\frac{7}{12}$ and $\frac{3}{4}$

Re-writing the above fractions as follows

$\frac{7}{12}$ and $\frac{3\times3}{4\times3} $ or $\frac{7}{12}$ and $\frac{9}{12}$

So Vaid worked longer as $\frac{9}{12} $> $\frac{7}{12}$ or $\frac{3}{4}$ > $\frac{7}{12}$

The difference of these fractions is $\frac{9}{12}$ - $\frac{7}{12}$ = $\frac{2}{12}$ = $\frac{1}{6}$

Vaid worked longer by a fraction of $\frac{1}{6}$ hour.
