Mention rule number 2 of the Roman numeral.
Rule number 2 of the roman numerals :
If a smaller number precedes a larger number, subtract the smaller number.
For example,
$IV = 5-1 = 4$ (Since we cannot use four identical numerals in a row, 4 would not be IIII but rather IV)
$IX = 10-1 = 9$
$XL = 50-10 = 40$ (40 would not be XXXX but, rather, XL)
