Explanation
Ball-and-socket joints
Ball-and-socket joints are a type of Synovial joints or movable joints.
In this joint, the rounded head of one bone sits within the cup of another, which allows movement in all directions such as bending and circular movement as well as rotation of the limb.
Ball-and-socket joints are present in the hip joint, shoulder joint, and the first and second vertebrae of the neck, that allow the head to move back and forth.
Hinge Joints
A hinge joint is a type of synovial joint that allows motion only in one plane.
These joints are formed when two or more bones meet and move along an axis to bend.
Hinge joints are assisted by other tissues, including cartilage and ligaments, to connect and bend.
It is made up of an articular surface that is covered by hyaline cartilage and lubricated by synovial fluid.
Hinge joints are present in the ankles, elbows, fingers, knees, and toes.
Gliding Joints
Plane joints, also called gliding joint or arthrodial joint, is a common type of synovial joint built between bones that meet on flat or nearly flat articular surfaces, enabling the bones to slide over each other. This type of joint allows the bones to move in a sliding motion, in either direction along the joint plane up and down, right and left, and diagonally. Slight rotations can also occur at these joints but are limited by the shape and the elasticity of the surrounding joint capsule.
Gliding joints are present in, joint at the wrist, between the carpals, etc.
