Kristin received a CD player for her birthday. She bought 3 CDs and received 5 others as gifts. What fraction of her total CDs did she buy and what fraction did she receive as gifts?

Given:

CDs bought by Kristin = 3

CDs received as gifts = 5

To find: We have to find what fraction of kristin total CDs did she buy and what fraction did she receive as gifts

Solution:

Total number of CDs = CDs bought by Kristin + CDs received as gifts

                                      = 3 + 5

                                      = 8

Now,

Fraction of CD's bought by kristin = $ \begin{array}{l} \frac{CD's\ brought\ by\ kristin}{Total\ number\ of\ CD's}\ \end{array}$

= $\frac{3}{8}$

Fraction of CD's received as gifts = $ \begin{array}{l} \frac{CD's\ received\ as\ gifts}{Total\ number\ of\ CD's}\ \end{array}$

= $\frac{5}{8}$
