If we need to make $\frac{4}{2}, \frac{9}{5}, \frac{6}{7}$ and $\frac{1}{8}$ as like fractions and put them in ascending order, how should we do that?
Solution:
To convert like fractions , first we need to find LCM of the denominators. Then we have to convert them into like fractions.
Like fractions have the same denominators.
So, we take LCM of 2, 5, 7, 8 which is 280.
We have to multiply and divide the fraction such that denominator becomes 280.
Divide 280 by 2, 5, 7, 8 and note down the quotients. Multiply both the numerator and denominator of every fraction by the corresponding quotients.
$\frac{4}{2} = \frac{4}{2}\times\frac{140}{140} = \frac{560}{280}$
$\frac{9}{5} = \frac{9}{5}\times\frac{56}{56} = \frac{504}{280}$
$\frac{6}{7} = \frac{6}{7}\times\frac{40}{40} = \frac{240}{280}$
$\frac{1}{8} = \frac{1}{8}\times\frac{35}{35} = \frac{35}{280}$
Now, they are like fractions and on comparing the numerators we can find that 35 < 240 < 504 < 560
so $\frac{1}{8} < \frac{6}{7} < \frac{9}{5} < \frac{4}{2}$
