Hydrochloric acid reacts with a metal X to form a gas Y which burns with a ‘pop’ sound. Sodium hydroxide solution also reacts with the same metal X (on heating) to form the same gas Y.
(a) Name X and Y
(b) Write the chemical equation of the reaction of metal X with
(i) Hydrochloric acid, and (ii) Sodium hydroxide solution.
 (a) X is zinc (Zn) and Y is hydrogen gas(H2) .
(b) (i) When metal Zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid, zinc chloride and hydrogen is formed. The chemical equation is given by:
$Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl_2(aq) + H_2(g)$
(ii) When metal Zinc reacts with sodium hydroxide, sodium zincate and hydrogen is formed. The chemical equation is given by:
$2NaOH(aq) + Zn(s) → Na_2ZnO_2(aq) + H_2(g)$
