How would you separate a mixture of sugar and salt?
To separate a mixture of sugar and salt by filtration method is used followed by evaporation.
- In this process, the solvent used is alcohol instead of water because of the difference in solubility of salt and sugar in alcohol.
- Salt is insoluble in alcohol but sugar is soluble in it. The undissolved salt can be obtained by filtration.
- The filtrate now has only sugar dissolved in alcohol. On heating, the alcohol evaporates and sugar is left behind.
