How will you distinguish between cotton, wool, silk and synthetic fabrics?
There is basically three-way to distinguish the textile fibre. 1. Feel test 2. Burn test 3. Solubility test Among these burning tests is most commonly used in daily application. Fibre can be distinguished according to their burning behaviour when they come in contact with flame. Wool- When it comes in contact with flame, it shrinks initially. The smell of burning hair. Flame didn't propagate, doesn't burn easily, takes time to burn. Leave black Crushable ash. Cotton- propagate flame as cotton comes in contact with flame with yellow flame. The smell of burning paper. Leave grey-white ash. Silk- Burns slowly, but does not melt. It shrinks from the flame. The smell of charred meat. Synthetic fibre- They catch fire very easily, will burn away in no time, mostly synthetic fibre shrink when they come in contact with flame. Smell like burning coal tar.
