An easy way to think of independent and dependent variables is, when we are drawing a graph, the independent variable is what we change, and the dependent variable is what changes because of that.

Example :

 Identify the dependent and independent variables in the following problem.

Here, Independent variable is Clay bought by teacher and dependent variable is Clay available for class.
