Find the median of the following data.

31, 38, 27, 28, 36, 25, 35, 40

Given:

31, 38, 27, 28, 36, 25, 35, 40

To do:

We have to find the median of the given data.

Solution:

We know that,

Median $= \frac{1}{2}[\frac{n}{2}th\ term+(\frac{n}{2}+1)th\ term]$  (when $n$ is even)

Arranging the given data in ascending order, we get,

$25, 27, 28, 31, 35, 36, 38, 40$

Here,

$n = 8$ which is even

Therefore,

Median $= \frac{1}{2}[4th\ term + 5th\ term]$

$= \frac{1}{2}(31+35)$

$= \frac{66}{2}$

$= 33$
